Who We Are
Xceptional Heroes (XH) is a group of friends, family members, caregivers, and individuals all united by our passion of supporting young adults with cognitive/intellectual disabilities in Genesee County, Michigan. XH was established to facilitate social, recreational, and life skills opportunities for individuals living a “differently-abled” life. Following the structure and socialization that high school/transition programs offered, many young adults struggle to maintain relationships and social engagements upon graduation. While we try to keep our focus on a “young adult” population, 17 yrs. and up, we realize anyone can benefit from the support system provided by XH. Our Heroes are very welcoming and accepting of anyone who joins us, regardless of their cognitive abilities.
XH has been a true grass-roots effort. Jenn Silverton and Teresa White started by simply creating recreational outings for our “kids” which drew interest from other families experiencing the same challenges. Today, our family of Heroes anxiously await the monthly activity calendars and look forward to the events where they can spend time with and enjoy a connection with their peers.
Our activities are peer-led by our amazing Respite and Community Living Support certified volunteers. An unexpected benefit of our peer-led activities is the fellowship of parents/guardians/caregivers who can engage with one another and find support amongst ourselves. There is power and strength in numbers, and ours continue to grow every day!
We have big plans for the future of XH, and we cannot wait to watch our Heroes soar!
